Caroline Kennedy takes stand on islands dispute, wins unanimous nod by Senate for Japan post

The only surviving child of former President John F. Kennedy was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee as President Obama’s new ambassador to Japan, all but guaranteeing the blessing by the full senate. The vote was supposed to take place Oct. 1, but it was not clear whether the government would be shut down so the senators in the committee moved up the voting schedule to Sept. 30 to avoid a delay.
