A prime waterfront portion in downtown Hong Kong called the Central has been appropriated for the construction of a naval port for the exclusive use of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy’s warships. The action is viewed as another symbolic move to intimidate and demoralize increasingly disenchanted Hong Kong residents many of whom are demanding direct elections and autonomy from Beijing’s communist government.
