Taiwan’s Ma finally speaks out against China’s ADIZ as his ratings tank

Long accused of being too soft on China, Taiwan’s incumbent president Ma Ying-jeou toughened his stance in opposition to China’s newly announced East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone. “The mainland Chinese authorities did not consult with our side before they announced the ADIZ, [which overlaps with Taiwan’s ADIZ]. Actions like this are not helpful to the positive development of the cross-Strait relationship,” Ma told the visiting James Steinberg, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State under the first Obama Administration.
