Taiwan’s Ma shocks his nation by saying mainland China is not a foreign country

China and Taiwan are not in an international relationship, said Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou on Taiwan’s National Day, Oct.10. Ma’s remarks angered many Taiwanese as 80-90 percent of Taiwanese citizens consistently oppose any immediate “reunification” with communist China and consider Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, a de-facto independent state.
